Barcode is collection of lines representing
information about the product on which it is attached. The barcode contains
optical machine readable data. The
information or data is in the different width, spacing of the lines. Originally,
the barcodes were in lines and were linear. Later one dimensional and two dimensional
codes were developed. These codes were in rectangles, dots, hexagons and
geometry patterns. All the codes can be read only with the barcode reading
devices. Now, the software to read the barcodes also comes in Smartphones.
Types
of bar codes –
Barcodes can be divided into numeric only, alpha
numeric only or 2 dimensional codes.
Code 39 can be of any length and has large number of
characters enclosed in it. This bar code has upper case letters , digits and
some special characters space , minus ,
period , dolor sign , percentage , plus and slash . This code 39 can be
extended by encoding several other characters like lowercase letters and
additional symbols. The code 39 (HIBC) is alphanumeric symbol, which is has character
+ plus sign as start character for each symbol.
Code bar contains digits from 0 to 9 and six
characters such as plus, dolor sign,
slash sign, and start / stop characters like AB C and D. Post Net –this is only
numeric code and contains digits from 0 to 9. It can be printed as five digit
code or 9 digit codes.
UPC codes come in two versions of UPC –A and UPC – E
.The first version has to contain 12 digits and this is fixed length code. The
UPC – E is also fixed length numeric only symboling code. In this code all
symbol must begin with zero. Interleaved
2 – 5 is numeric barcode and contains only even number of digits.

this barcode 6 digits are contained and all symbols must begin with zero.
EAN -13 contains 13 digits in place of 12 digits. It
is also fixed length numeric only symbol code .similarly, there is Book land and

Use
of barcodes –
Barcodes help to maintain the record of goods during
